Owning a four-wheeler or side-by-side means having the freedom to explore the mountains and wilderness in amazing ways. Should i buy insurance for my atv, These machines are fun to ride, and they are fun to own. They will take you to the most beautiful places in Utah. But they are also inherently dangerous.
Everyone who owns an ATV or UTV should buy liability insurance. I personally own a UTV, and I bought liability coverage on it with limits of $250,000/$500,000 per person/per accident. That means if I, or someone driving my UTV, causes an injury to someone else there will be insurance to cover their losses.
It also means that if I am using my UTV and I get injured because of someone else’s negligence, there will be coverage for my injuries as well as per Schrieverlaw. That is important because injuries involving off-road vehicles happen frequently and can be severe.
The good news is that ATV coverage is very affordable. My annual premium notice showed up in the mail this week. I was surprised at how inexpensive the coverage was. The annual insurance premium on my policy was a little over $300. That’s $300 for the entire year! There is simply no excuse for someone not to buy ATV insurance.
ATV insurance works the same way as automobile insurance. However, it is not required by law so many people do not purchase it. That is a big mistake that can cost people dearly.
It is also possible that people may not realize they can buy liability insurance for their recreational vehicles. We hope that changes soon because it is crazy for someone to own a four-wheeler or side-by-side and not buy insurance. Why put your personal assets and your own financial well-being at risk? Get coverage!
Injuries from ATV accidents can be horrific. We regularly see significant head injuries, broken backs, broken arms and broken legs. I have seen ATV cases where medical bills alone were over $100,000, and that was not counting anything for lost wages, permanent disabilities or pain and suffering.
ATV accidents can cause permanent injuries that are very costly to take care of. Ask anyone who has spent time around four-wheelers and side-by-sides and they can tell you about terrible accidents and injuries caused by these types of vehicles. Most ATV and UTV owners can tell you their own stories about the “close calls” they have had.
I recently had two cases where my clients were injured by ATV drivers who had no insurance. We fought hard to get them a recovery, but it would have been much easier and better for everyone involved if the ATV owners had purchased liability insurance.
Do yourself, and everyone you will encounter, a big favor and call your insurance agent about buying ATV liability insurance coverage. It will not cost you much, and it will provide you an added level of financial security that you will be grateful to have.
